Gluten Schmuten: Dr. Lucy’s chocolate chip cookies

GLUTENSCHUMUTENGluten-free foods are expensive and their flavor profile, in many cases, is suspect. The Al Dente blog is going to work through the good and the bad from the perspective of a toddler who known for her picky eating and her parents. We’ll collect these, as well as the rest of our journey with The Kid’s Celiac disease diagnosis, under the Gluten Schmuten category tag.

We ran across these at Green Planet Grocery, a nifty little natural foods store near my house. It was on our first shopping trip, so we were buying a little of everything to see what The Kid would like.

THE SELL: These award winning chocolate chip cookies just took top honors when compared to major gluten free brands in an independent taste test. Savor the organic cane sugar sweetness and our fancy dark chocolate chips. Yum!

THE PACKAGE: Each 5.5 oz. box has 15 cookies.

THE INGREDIENTS: Dr. Lucy’s Flour Blend (Gluten-Free Oat, Garbanzo, Potato Starch, Tapioca, Sorghum And Fava Flours), Organic Cane Sugar, Vegan Chocolate Chips, Gluten-Free Oat Flakes, Soy Milk, Brown Sugar, Palm Fruit Oil, Canola Oil, Olive Oil, Filtered Water, Flavoring And Citric Acid From Non-GMO Corn, Crushed Soy Beans, Sunflower Lecithin, Nondairy Lactic Acid, Beta-Carotene, Baking Powder, Baking Soda, Vanilla Extract, Salt, Xanthan Gum, Calcium Carbonate, Annatto Extract Color, Cellulose Gum.

THE COST: $3.99 per box.

THE REPLACEMENT: Homemade. We haven’t ventured into baking yet.

THE ADULT TASTE TEST: I liked them. They were a little gritty, but I chalked that up to processed oats.

THE KID TEST: It was like she never had cookies before. It was like she had not eaten in days. It was like nothing was different.

THE VERDICT: Cha-ching!
